Engineering study: Fish production and system optimisation

An earlier feasibility study showed the necessity of adjustments to the European Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) upon implementation in Africa.

Holland Aqua conducted a followup engineering study into the best technical combination of three major farm design topics (production, investment and climate) for tilapia production in a closed recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) in Kenya. The aim of this study was to lower the production cost price, to maximise productivity and to maximise the technical feasibility of RAS, benchmarked against cage culture. The concept of a modular farm system was investigated in order to establish whether it could further reduce investment costs.

The study contained a description of the aquaculture production plan, the investment plan and the climate/building plan. In the framework of the FoodTechAfrica initiative, this study was the foundation for designing and constructing a pilot farm in Machakos, Kenya.
