Holland Aqua managed the design and construction of an intensive RAS fish farm in Kigali, Rwanda, including training of the Lakeside fish farm staff.
Following activities in Kenya, an RAS fish farm model was developed for the entire East African region. In order to get a better understanding of the market in this region, the RAS system FisHub was applied in Rwanda for demonstration and testing purposes.
The implementation of the FisHub technology in East Africa will have a direct impact on fish production and food security in the region. Rwanda is an interesting market for aquaculture development. Given its rapid population growth, economic development and the ability to feed its growing population with locally produced proteins (rather than importing it from China) is very desirable for Rwanda.
The project was co-financed by the government of the Netherlands. On June 11, 2019, the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Frédérique de Man, opened the demonstration farm. The project is an initiative of the FoodTechAfrica consortium, of which Holland Aqua is a partner.
